PHILOSOPHY
A student learns best when his mind is open. Once a student has learned to relate openly and honestly with himself and others, he can then participate in the scientific process. He may ask searching questions, actively process new ideas, honestly evaluate evidence, and present his thoughts and conclusions.
GOALS
- To promote scientific thinking and interest in science
- To equip students for problem-solving
- To individualize a student's science program to meet his specific needs and interests.
- To help students understand science concepts and how science affects their daily lives.
- To promote an understanding of, and appreciation and respect for, wildlife and the natural environment.
WEATHER STATION
The Automated Weather Source PC-MET system is a stand alone, fully automated weather system. The system combines quality weather sensors with microprocessor controlled data logging, visual displays and software for communications and graphical display. All stats can be interconnected through an Automated Weather Source Network where automated telecommunications software can be used to access and view data from any station on the network.
The system design has been specifically tailored for use in education. Students and teachers at New Dominion can easily access our own local station and stations on the Automated Weather Source network to monitor many aspectss of local weather conditions, including temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure. An additional system, which is satellite linked and leased through DTN, allows any user to view weather conditions and accurate local forecasts for any location in the continental United States. Students enjoy using the DTN system to monitor the weather"back home," especially prior to their homne visits.
The innovative project integrating the weather station, curriculum and staff development was made possible through an award from GTE as part of its Growth Initiatives for Teachers grants program.
Students give weather conditions to the student body daily. Students learn how to read and use weather instruments. We have included links to a variety of exciting resources. There are thousands more to explore. Try following the hyper text to see how many you can reach.
