A confident student is a successful student PHILOSOPHY
The English program at New Dominion School actively pursues the education and development of our students with the belief that a student's self-perception, confidence, and education are intertwined in a way that each is dependent on the other two. As a student's reading, writing, and communication skills grow, he gains confidence in himself and, thus, attains a more positive self-perception. Similarly, a student's confidence and self-perception strongly influence his achievements in the classroom.
The English Department seeks to stimulate a student's growth by exposing him to a wide variety of reading, writing, and speaking experiences. Through these stimuli, students increase vocabulary and grammar knowledge, refine reading, writing, and communication skills, and gain confidence in themselves and their ability to use these skills in the classroom and in social situations. The controlling factor behind this philosophy is to prepare students for success in appropriate grade level, post secondary education, or the world of work.
GOALS
- To prepare students for appropriate grade level, college, trade school, or employment.
- To develop students' reading, writing, and communication skills through a number of different experiences in literature, writing, and discussion.
- To enhance students' confidence and self-perception through achievements in the classroom.
- To increase students' knowledge and appreciation of the English language.
Literature heightens student interest in words. After unlocking the meaning of new words, students immediately apply their knowledge in reading, as well as, in the group.
